Paint Correction is the removal of defects that are present on your paint to restore it to a new, or even better than new state. This includes swirl marks, surface scratches, RIDS (random isolated deep scratches), holograms, oxidation, marring, water spots, and bird drop etching. Most commonly, these defects occur from automated car washes or improper washing techniques, but can range from many other causes from finger nails to key scratches. It is very common to see detail shops use products known as “fillers,” which are temporarily filling the scratch, but not truly removing them. If you have ever wondered why the vehicle looked in poor condition after a few washes, you will know that it was a quick cover up job. The only real, true way to remove these defects is the process of paint correction.
Some common defects illustrated to show what it looks like in your clear coat, which can then be leveled down to a smooth, clear surface.
Have you ever looked at your paint in the sun and noticed scratches that appear almost like a spider web? Contrary to what many may have been told or known to be proper technique, this is caused by circular motion washing or waxing and either the improper material or one with contaminants on it. Many other things can be the culprit of the types of defects listed above, but these are known to be the most common.

There are certain products that are key in maintaining a vehicle’s paint. Having a wash mitt that will not induce marring is the first thing one should invest in. I would recommend the use of a very soft material mitt that will reduce the risk of creating these defects in your paint. You never want to apply pressure to the paint to get deeper dirt out, as it will cause marring easily. There are heavier cleaners that can be applied that will loosen up the dirt. Using a two bucket method will keep your wash mitt clean (one bucket with water that you put the mitt into after doing a section to remove contaminants and then back into bucket with soap to then do your next section. The less you can touch your paint the better. If you have the means I would recommend a few pieces of equipment. First, the foam gun, which will loosen up the dirt and some even falls right off the car. Secondly, something to blow the water off the car such as the automotive specific blower (Metro Master Blaster), leaf blower, or compressed air. If using a towel, make sure it is a soft, microfiber one and use blotting over sweeping motions.

Yes, believe it or not most cars come off the factory floor with defects in the paint. Some are even made worse or additional issues contributed by automakers auto spas. Many cars sit in ports and are exposed to the elements that can easily induce defects into the paint and then get handled by the dealership to try to cover and end up in most cases turning out for the worse. This is the perfect time to have this taken care of and protected properly.
